TKMP: Mentee Resources

Welcome to the Team Kentucky Mentorship Program! We are excited for you as you embark on this year-long mentorship program as you receive individualized support and intentional professional development. If you need anything as you continue through this program, please reach out to your mentor, your agency's Mentorship Program Coordinator, or the Office of Employee Engagement and Training.

Take these essential steps to ensure a successful mentorship:

1. Complete the MyPURPOSE course titled "Overview of TKMP for Mentors and Mentees."

2. Attend the MPC-led orientation to understand program expectations, available resources (such as the IDP, Mentoring Agreement, and meeting logs), and networking opportunities.

3. Review your mentor's profile including background, expertise, and interests, and prepare thoughtful questions to align your career goals.

4. Contact your mentor to schedule your first meeting within one week of matching, suggesting a time, format, and an initial agenda.

5. Prepare for the first meeting by outlining your development goals, preferred communication methods, and establish confidentiality between both parties.

6. Collaboratively complete your Individual Development Plan (IDP), defining two or three specific, measurable short-term objectives.

7. Finalize and sign the Mentoring Agreement by the second meeting to formalize responsibilities, meeting frequency, and focus areas.

8. Establish recurring meetings and set norms for between-session check-ins (such as brief emails or calls). Add all meetings to both calendars.

9. Suggest and plan activities such as resume reviews, skill practice, job shadowing, or joint attendance at events to advance your IDP goals.

10. Document meeting notes, track progress using TKMP templates, and submit midpoint and final evaluations as required.

11. Engage your MPC for guidance, support, or to address any challenges that arise during the mentorship cycle.

Mentoring Best Practices and Engagement

Establish Clarity and Commitment
At your first meeting, discuss meeting frequency, communication methods, confidentiality and development goals. Commit to attending and preparing for every session.

Drive the Agenda and Take Initiative
Propose activities or resources that align with your goals. Be ready to discuss relevant topics, questions, and challenges.

Communicate Openly and Listen Actively
Share your successes, setbacks, and feedback needs openly. Practice attentive listening when your mentor offers guidance and ask clarifying questions as needed.

Establish Goals and Objectives
Define two or three specific, measurable objectives in your Individual Development Plan (IDP). Regularly review and adjust milestones as you progress and your aspirations evolve.

Embrace Feedback and Continuous Learning
Act on constructive feedback, reflect on new insights, and seek opportunities to apply lessons learned between meetings.

Diversify Engagement Activities
Propose varied engagement formats such as job shadowing, mock presentations, skill drills, resume reviews, or co-attendance at conferences and webinars to deepen learning through practical experiences.

Maintain Consistent Communication
Schedule recurring sessions, set calendar reminders, and agree on between-meeting check-ins (such as brief emails or calls) to sustain momentum.

Track Progress and Document Outcomes
Use TKMP templates to record meeting notes, action items, and achievements. Regularly revisiting documentation helps measure growth and identify areas for improvement.

Recognize Achievements and Share Feedback
Celebrate milestones, big or small, and communicate your progress to your mentor and MPC. Provide candid program feedback to enhance the TKMP for future participants.
